Our Story

The stars aligned in a Texas starry sky way.

You love wine and that feeling of spontaneous overflow when you and your crew gather and share stories and create new ones to celebrate life’s moments.

We do too.  Memories and stories are the red threads that entwine our lives together just like the  twisting of vines over a trellis.  Our Bluemont, Virginia vines have us deeply rooted but the pioneer in us felt the pull of something bigger.  Those red threads lead us to Texas and we simply felt the spontaneous overflow.

And who knew the virtue of Texas wines could be so vibrant and delicious?  We felt such a sense of welcome, wonder and discovery of new varietals (Can you say Tempranillo?) in The Texas Hill Country.  It sparked a whole new vision to discover new horizons west of the sun(rise).

Voilàl The stars have divinely aligned in a huge Texas starry sky and we find ourselves opening the doors of a new tasting room filled with flair and flavor.  We want to share this sense of wonder and adventure with you as we explore new frontiers as a family and put down roots to create a bit of Bluemont in Texas.

Are you ready to trust your thirst?  Then let’s sip back, pop a bottle and explore this Texas Terroir together.

The beginning

The 70’s were a vibe and that’s when ours began in Virginia when Bob and Faye settled the flock in LoCo Virginia.

putting down our roots in bluemont, virginia

The second generation of Zurschmeides dug in with the purchase of a fallow farm in Bluemont, Virginia in 1993. With a vision to nurture the land into a place for our community to experience farm life and the benefits of its bounty, the Zurschmeides built Great Country Farms into a pick your own destination filled with family fun on the farm.

Expanding Craft Beverage

The Blue Ridge Mountains offered a dreamy canvas for grapes and orchards and expansion into a pallet of craft beverages. The vision of Bluemont Vineyard went from abstract to reality in 2007. The love for farming & craft creations expanded with craft beer at Dirt Farm Brewing in 2015 and hard cider at Henway Hard Cider in 2019.

Exploring Texas

While visiting family in Austin, we were simply wowed by the wines of The Texas Hill Country and the visit quickly became a vision of Bluemont vibes in Texas. The warmth of The Hill Country hospitality tapped into our German roots and gave us a sense of place we’ve not found anywhere else. Danke Lieber Vater!

new Roots

At the end of the day, we will always be simple dirt farmers looking for a way to share the bounty of the land with our community. As you sip wine under the post oaks, it is our hope that our farming roots ring true in each vintage, and that you fall in love with this Texas Terroir, just as we have.
